Direct Service Professionals (DSP) or Certified Nurse Aides (CNA)
Career Opportunities in the Human Service Field are available for caring persons who want to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with mental disabilities. High School diploma or equivalent required. Potential advancement opportunities to a Case Manager/QMRP (Qualified Mental Retardation Professional) for persons with a Bachelors Degree.
Three and one half weeks of formal training classes are provided followed by on the job training with supervision and assistance from supervisors and seasoned staff members. Once training has been completedDirect Service Professionals assume responsibility for direct personal care of persons with disabilities. This involves providing, assisting with, or supervising hygiene, grooming and selection of appropriate clothing. The Direct Service Professionals also assumes responsibility for cleanliness and organization of the residents' environmental space.
Many of our Direct Service Professionals are able to learn techniques to use modern specialized therapy-related equipment. When specialized equipment is needed to meet the needs of a resident, training and supervision are provided relating to the needs, usage and proper techniques.
Recreational opportunities are very important for our residents and Direct Service Professionals accompany them and participate in a variety of activities which include but are not limited to swimming, bowling, team sports and events in the community such as movies, dinners at restaurants, sporting events. etc.
All of our residents have Individual Program Plans with goals identified to help them achieve and maintain the highest level of functioning possible. Direct Service Professionals are given specific responsibilities to help the residents achieve their goals. For example a goal might be for a resident to be able to brush his/her teeth independently. The Habilitation Aide responsibility may be to provide hand over hand assistance with this task until the resident is able to do it independently.
Direct Service Professionals are assigned to a specific home or residential area. Staff resident ratios are excellent and depend upon the functioning abilities of the persons residing in the area. When residents are very dependent and require complete care the ratio can be 1:3. For higher functioning residents the staff resident ratio may be 1:6. This allows Direct Service Professionals to develop ongoing relationships with residents and act as mentors/buddies while helping them achieve their goals.
Since we are a residential facility open twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, flexible hours are available. Assignments are generally for either:
- morning shifts 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
- afternoon shifts 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Days off during the week are arranged when weekend work is required. Weekend staffing is important as this is when many social and recreational activities are scheduled.
